Other Supportive Measures

Practical steps you can take to help yourself

In addition to augmentation therapy, there are other things you can do to help you live a healthy lifestyle with Alpha-1.

  • Quit smoking—If you're a smoker, no other single factor can improve your prospects for survival as much as quitting. Contact your local American Lung Association for smoking cessation programs, or ask your doctor for help4,7
  • Avoid respiratory irritants—Try to avoid breathing dust, pollen, pet dander, and fumes, including smoke of any kind.4,7 Talk with your physician about air purifiers for your home
  • Avoid infection—Among the most effective ways to minimize the risk of infection are washing your hands frequently and avoiding contact with people who have a cold or the flu. Ask your doctor about pneumonia vaccine and annual flu shots.4,7 Avoid crowds, especially high-risk environments such as movie theaters, airplanes, hospitals, clinics, schools and daycare facilities. If you must go to a high-risk environment, wear a mask around your mouth and nose.7
  • Exercise daily—Developing an exercise routine with your doctor's input can be critical. If you have lung problems, a pulmonary rehabilitation exercise program is highly recommended. Ask your doctor about this type of program4,7
  • Eat healthy—Eating properly may help preserve lung function. Talk with your doctor about finding a nutritionist who can help design a dietary plan that will work for you4,7
  • Reduce stress—Choose from a wide variety of stress-reducing activities, including breathing exercises, meditation, and yoga4,7
  • Use inhalers—Metered-dose inhalers and inhaled corticosteroids may provide temporary relief of symptoms. Be sure to follow your doctor's instructions when using these prescription therapies7

Important Safety Information

Alpha1-Proteinase Inhibitor (Human), Zemaira® is indicated for chronic augmentation and maintenance therapy for adults with alpha1-proteinase inhibitor (A1-PI) deficiency and emphysema. Clinical data demonstrating the long-term effects of chronic augmentation therapy with Zemaira are not available.

Zemaira may not be appropriate for the following adult individuals as they may experience severe reactions, including anaphylaxis: individuals with a known hypersensitivity and/or history of anaphylaxis or severe systemic reaction to A1-PI products or their components, and individuals with selective IgA deficiencies who have known antibodies against IgA.

In clinical studies, the following treatment-related adverse reactions were reported in 1% of subjects: asthenia (fatigue), injection-site pain, dizziness, headache, paresthesia (tingling), and pruritus (itching).

Zemaira is derived from human plasma. The risk of transmission of infectious agents, including viruses and, theoretically, the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) agent, cannot be completely eliminated.
